Background of the Study:
Social media platforms have revolutionized the way communities interact, transcending traditional social boundaries and offering new spaces for dialogue. In Umuahia South Local Government, Abia State, social media is increasingly playing a critical role in promoting inter-ethnic relations by providing platforms for diverse groups to communicate and share cultural experiences (Chukwu, 2023). This digital interaction not only facilitates understanding and tolerance among different ethnic groups but also acts as a catalyst for conflict resolution by creating virtual communities of interest (Nwankwo, 2024). The inherent nature of social media encourages participation and inclusion, thereby fostering a sense of unity in a historically diverse region. However, challenges such as misinformation, echo chambers, and digital divides may hinder these positive outcomes. Recent studies suggest that while social media holds promise in bridging ethnic gaps, its impact is contingent on the strategies employed by users and community leaders (Okafor, 2025). This investigation aims to analyze how these platforms can be optimized to build trust and enhance inter-ethnic cooperation in Umuahia South, considering the unique cultural and social dynamics of the region.

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the potential of social media to improve inter-ethnic relations, Umuahia South Local Government still experiences tension and miscommunication among diverse groups. The challenge is to determine whether digital interactions on these platforms lead to genuine understanding or if they inadvertently reinforce stereotypes. Limited research exists on the nuanced effects of social media on ethnic relations in this locality, necessitating a focused inquiry to understand the underlying dynamics (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To investigate how social media influences inter-ethnic relations in Umuahia South Local Government.

  2. To identify the key factors that promote or hinder positive ethnic interactions online.

  3. To recommend strategies for leveraging social media to foster inter-ethnic understanding.

Research Questions:

  1. In what ways does social media facilitate inter-ethnic dialogue in Umuahia South?

  2. What challenges do ethnic groups face in using social media for constructive engagement?

  3. How can social media strategies be improved to enhance inter-ethnic relations?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Social media positively influences inter-ethnic relations in Umuahia South Local Government.

  2. Increased digital engagement correlates with improved ethnic understanding.

  3. Tailored social media strategies reduce inter-ethnic tensions.

Significance of the Study:
This study will provide insights for community leaders and policymakers to enhance digital strategies that promote social cohesion and understanding, thereby mitigating ethnic conflicts in Umuahia South Local Government (Eze, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to investigating the role of social media in fostering inter-ethnic relations in Umuahia South Local Government, Abia State.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Social Media: Digital platforms used for communication and information sharing.

  2. Inter-ethnic Relations: Interactions and relationships between different ethnic groups.
